Half com. Online marketplace with discounted prices.
Half com, an eBay company, offers people a fixed-price, online marketplace to buy and sell high quality, new, overstocked, remaindered and used products at discounted prices. Unlike auctions, where the selling price is based on bidding, the seller sets the price for items at Halfcom at the time an item is listed. The site's expanding marketplace currently includes books, CDs, movies, video games, computers, consumer electronics, sporting goods and trading cards.

Halfcom's founder and president, Joshua Kopelman, came up with the idea for Halfcom when he realized there were inefficiencies between the supply and demand for used mass-market items. Half.com overcomes these inefficiencies and significantly streamlines the entire process of connecting people to buy and sell over the Internet.
Buying at Halfcom is similar to the shopping experience at other leading online retailers. Shoppers can easily search for specific items or browse for items that are categorized and surrounded with product descriptions, reviews and artwork. Sellers easily list items for sale by typing in a UPC code, ISBN, or model number, selecting the item's condition and setting the sale price. There are no fees to list items on Halfcom and sellers are charged a commission on each sale only after an item sells.
Halfcom, based in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, was founded in July 1999. Winner of the Codie Award for Best e-Commerce Web Site Innovation, Halfcom is one of the most visited shopping sites on the Internet and through its ever-growing community of sellers, offers more than 50 million items for sale. Half.com's phenomenal growth drew the attention of eBay, the world's largest personal online trading community, who acquired Half.com in July 2000.
Halfcom made national and international news when it launched its site in January 2000, by collaborating with Halfway, a small town in Oregon, who changed its name to Half.com, Oregon, becoming the first "dot com" city in America.
Selling - How does it work?
Half com is the place for you to turn your unwanted stuff into cash. Here, you can sell all sorts of stuff, like books, CDs, movies, video games, home electronics, computer equipment, trading cards, sporting goods, etc. Listing your stuff for sale is easy on Halfcom. In many cases, Halfcom's catalog already contains all the information that buyers are looking for on the product you're listing for sale. However, if you are listing an item that is not a book, CD, movie or video game and the item is not in our catalog we'll provide you with the tools needed to get it listed.
Best of all, listing items for sale is FREE at Halfcom. Once you list your stuff, it's almost as simple as watching the money roll in. Here's how to do it, in 3 easy steps:
Click "Sell Your Stuff" at the top of any page and enter the appropriate item "number" (for example, ISBN for books or UPC code for CDs, movies, electronics, etc.) to find the item. You can also run a search from any page to find the particular item you wish to sell. On the item's detail page click on the "Sell Yours Now" button to begin listing it for sale.
Looking to list a lot of items for sale?
If you have a lot of items to sell click on the "Find out what we can do for you" link on the "Start Selling" page to find out how Halfcom can help you list a lot of items at once.
As soon as someone's bought one of your items, we'll send you an email. All you need to do is a.) reply to the email so we know you'll be sending the item in the next 24 hours and b.) package it up well so the item is protected and ship it.
How do I get paid for my sales?
You can either get paid via Direct Deposit or paper check. Payments via Direct Deposit will be paid twice monthly. Payment periods will end on the 15th and last day of each month. Your seller balance at the end of each period will be deposited in your personal checking account within 7 business days from the end of the period. Payments via check will be made up to twice a month, depending on how much you sell.
Your payments will be for the amount you've sold minus a 15% commission. Half.com will pay a fixed shipping reimbursement for all sales in our book, music, movie and video game product categories. For all other categories, there is no shipping reimbursement, however we allow you to enter a shipping amount as part of your overall item price.
Buying - How does it work?
Shopping at Halfcom is a lot like shopping everywhere else on the Internet. You can use our search engine to find specific items you're looking for, or you can browse for items by category. Plus, you simply use your credit card to purchase on Half com.
When you're shopping for books, CDs, movies or video games, go to the item's detail page and click "Buy" to place the item in your cart. When you're shopping for items in our other categories go to the seller's item description page, select your shipping method and click "Buy". Once you've finished shopping, click "Checkout" in your shopping cart and Halfcom will help you complete your purchase.
The big difference at Halfcom is that you're not buying stuff from us, you are buying it from other Halfcom Members. When you find the item you want, you get to choose which item to buy and from whom. Items can vary in price and condition and sellers typically have various ratings from Members that have bought from them previously. If no one's selling what you want, you have some options:
You can add the item to your Wish List, and we'll email you when it becomes available.
You can add the item* to your PreOrder list, and when the item becomes available it will be automatically purchased for you and your credit card will be charged. (*only for items in the books, music, movies and video game categories)
If you want the item right now, you can use our shopping engine to find the lowest prices available at top online retailers.
Once you've placed an order for an item, we go to work. First, we notify the seller of the item you've purchased. Then we email you as soon as the seller has confirmed that the item will be shipped. Finally, after your item has been sent, we charge your credit card. (No seller ever has access to your credit card.)
Privacy and Security at Halfcom
Halfcom is safe and secure. Your credit card information is encrypted using SSL, and no one else ever sees it. When you make a purchase, we charge your credit card, making Half.com safe and convenient.
Finally, we respect the privacy of our members: we will never give out any of your personal information to any third party without your permission. (Remember that we need to give your name and shipping address to the sellers of products you purchase. We do not, however, give out your email address.)

Auctions. Auctions having been started as long ago as 600 BC. In Babylon auctions of women for marriage were held every year. The auctions began with the woman the auctioneer considered to be the most beautiful. The word "auction" translated from the Latin as "I increase". An auction is a process of selling and goods or services by offering them up for bid, taking bids, and then selling the item to the highest bidder. There are some variations on the basic auction form, including minimum or maximum limits on bid prices, time limits, and special rules for determining the winning bidder or/and sale price. Today bidders may participate remotely through Internet.
