Internet Basics. Internet Service Providers.
Some people think the "Web" is the same as the Internet. No, it's not. The Internet actually consists of five major services:
1. World Wide Web (Web),
2. Electronic Mail (E-mail),
3. Newsgroups (Usenet),
4. Internet Relay Chat (IRC),
5. File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
1.
World Wide Web (Web). If you read this... You use World Wide Web (Web)! Congratulations! Internet address (URL - unique (sorry forget about what is R for) location) of this page is /internet/ or /internet/ or /internet/index.html. Please remember index.html or index.htm usaully used as a default page in each dir of any site. Understand?
2.
Electronic Mail (E-mail). For example if you decide to drop me a short message you will use actually
Electronic Mail service of Internet. Most people only concern themselves with the Web and e-mail.
3.
Newsgroups (Usenet). There are several ways to access NNTP / Usenet services. Search for the words Usenet servers or Free NNTP to find Web-based and traditional Usenet Newsgroup access.
4.
Internet Relay Chat (IRC). There are many popular chat and instant messaging applications in Internet such as mIRC, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM, MSN Messenger, etc.
5.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP). For webmasters. I use this feature of Internet to upload the web page on server. You now download it using World Wide Web (Web). It works this way everywhere in Virtual Space.
