Versions of HTML: 5, 4.01, XHTML, etc. Lesson 01.4.

HTML language from the date of its creation up to today has been developed in hard fighting between teams of great specialists in IT technology. As a results we have got a some mixture with different standards. It's not so easy to understand how to work with these standards. Since the early days of the Internet, there have been many versions of HTML: HTML (1990); HTML 2.0 (1995); HTML 3.2 (1997); HTML 4.01 (1999); XHTML (2000); HTML5 (2012).

Everything are changing all the time. Some things are correct today, but become wrong tomorrow.

NB. From now and on, we will use all dates in USA standard: MM/DD/YYYY

When I created this web page, very right option was: good and perspective HTML version is HTML 5.

But from the moment of this page creation passed by... let me count all minutes and seconds...
** years, ** months, ** days, ** hours, ** minutes, ** seconds...

... something may changed from this time, I guess...

We can reduce influence of factor called "many minutes passed by from this old good time" by using our built-in lab works. These lab works let us get actual information about HTML versions people like use today and about another important things.

This DTD is equal to XHTML 1.0 Strict, but allows you to add modules (to provide ruby support for East-Asian languages).

If you don't know what a version get in use right now, use version HTML 5. Other version we have to know only to understand code made by webmasters in old good faraway past.

DOCTYPE :: The DOCTYPE declaration defines the document type to be HTML
:: comments

The <!DOCTYPE> declaration must be the 1^st thing in your HTML document, before the <html> tag.

The <!DOCTYPE> declaration is not an HTML tag. It is an instruction for the web browser about what version of HTML the page is written in.

In HTML 4.01, the <!DOCTYPE> declaration refers to a DTD, because HTML 4.01 was based on SGML. The DTD specifies the rules for the markup language, so that the browsers render the content correctly.

HTML5 is not based on SGML, and therefore does not require a reference to a DTD.

Always add the <!DOCTYPE> declaration to your HTML documents, so that the browser knows what type of document to expect.
