One day, during a recent publicity outing, Eva sneaked off to visit a fortune teller of some local repute. In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered grave news. "There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just be blunt: Prepare yourself
to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year."
Visibly shaken, Eva stared at the woman's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. She simply had to know. She met the fortune teller's gaze, steadied her voice, and asked her.
"Will I be acquitted?"
The prophet thought for a while and answered.
"Yes. You will be acquitted. But only in 20 years."
John was dying. His wife, Eva, was maintaining a candlelight vigil by his side. She held his fragile hand, tears running down her face. Her praying roused him from his slumber. He looked up and his pale lips began to move slightly, "My darling Eva," he whispered.
"John, my love," she said. "Rest. Shhh, don't talk."
He was insistent. "Eva," he said in his tired voice, "I have something I must confess to you."
"There's nothing to confess," replied the weeping Eva. "Everything's all right. Go to sleep."
"No, no, I must die in peace, Eva. I slept with your sister Rose, your best friend Adolf, her best friend Mary and your mother!"
"I know," Eva whispered softly, "That's why I poisoned you."
The lawyer was reading out the Will of John to the people mentioned in the Will:
"To my loving wife Eva, who stood by me in the rough times, as well as the good; the house and $2 million."
"To Eva's sister Rose, who looked after me in illness and kept the business going; the yacht, the business and $4 million."
"For their love: to Adolf - $5, to Mary - $6, to mother of Eva - $8."
"And to my cousin Dick, who hated me, refuse to sleep with me, argued with me and thought I would not remember him in my Will, you were wrong: Hello Dick!"
Later, Eva was telling Adolf, "It was me who made a millionaire from John."
"And what was he before you married him?" asked Adolf.
Eva replied, "A billionaire."
A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly departed mother and started back toward his car when his attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave. The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and kept repeating, "Why did you have to die? Why did you have to die?"
The first man approached him and said, "Sir, I don't wish to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration of pain is more than I've ever seen before. For whom do you mourn so deeply? A child? A parent?"
